Scientific synergy is on display in the new temporary exhibit "Science by the Sea," open now through November.
"Science by the Sea" highlights the first scientific specimens of animals collected from the area. On loan from the Smithsonian Institution, the exhibit features artifacts returned to Carteret County for the first time in more than 140 years.
Visitors can experience a compelling story of why marine science took root along the beaches of Eastern North Carolina. "The Maritime Museum represents a crossroads of history and science," said Museum Education Curator Allison Besch. "The marine environment is the core factor that represents our history and culture. Without those first steps in science, we might not be where we are today."
Additionally you can:
- Be a real scientist with a hands-on microscope station
- Test your marine science knowledge with games and quizzes
- Learn about the special ecology and environment issues studied in Eastern North Carolina
- Go into the future with predictions on marine science along the coast
- Try your hand at the "Fin Game"
To celebrate the new exhibit, the Museum offers "Family Day - Mad Science" on Saturday, April 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Try your luck at Hermit Crab Bingo, pose for a photo op in a yellow submarine or let your creative side flow by helping to paint an "Under the Sea" mural.
