Museum holds Community Day

1-12-11

HATTERAS – The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum will hold a Community Day on Monday, Jan. 24, from 2 – 5 p.m.

“We want everyone in Hatteras to come. This is their museum and we’d very much like them to come see its progress,” said North Carolina Maritime Museums Director Joseph Schwarzer.

In the past year, the Museum has opened two new exhibits: “Pirates, Brigands and Scalawags: The Golden Age of Piracy” and “Ships Ashore.” In July 2010 the remains of a shipwreck found in Corolla, possibly the oldest in the state, were transported to the Museum for research, education and display. In addition, the Museum featured a temporary exhibit called, “Celebrate North Carolina: Faces and Places” in 2010, and nears the completion of a permanent exhibit on the USS Monitor. In August 2011 the Museum will host the Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration, “Flags Over Hatteras” along with local organizations.

Community Day is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
