Education

  1. Educational Services for Teachers and Tour Group Leaders
    1. General Information: Group tours are made by reservation and scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance of your visit. All programs begin with a personal Welcome and Introduction to maritime topics (10 minutes) followed by the museum rules (5 minutes). Please click here for complete details on group reservations.

    2. Museum Tours (20-45 minutes depending on size of group) - our most popular activity!
      1. Self-guided tours - of the exhibit area may be scheduled to begin weekdays from 9 AM to 4 PM, Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM weekdays, and Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM. A Guide to the Museum is available at the reception desk for group leaders to use for self-guided tours.

        We recommend supplemental worksheets for self-guided tours. The museum provides the following worksheets and lends out clipboards, and pencils to visiting groups at no charge.
        1. Pre K: Mini Sea Hunt
        2. K-3rd grade: Sea Hunt (English and Spanish eds.)
        3. 4th- 6th grade: Treasure Hunt (English and Spanish eds.)
        4. 7th grade and up: Mariner's Map
        5. 4th grade and up: Captain's Log. This is a 10-question self-guided worksheet for groups with limited time.

    4. Field Programs: Discover the North Carolina coastal environment firsthand! Field Programs are designed for classes studying coastal ecology or related science topics and are led by museum curators and instructors.

      1. Custom Programs - Museum educators are happy to work with you to create a special program that meets your specific class needs. Please call in advance to discuss programs that meet your curriculum needs.

  3. Programs For All Visitors
    1. Lectures, field programs, and other special events are available on our Public Calendar of Events

    2. Discovery Carts - Interact with a museum volunteer to learn more about our coastal resources. These informal hands-on opportunities are available year-round at the museum during most hours of operation. Topics include coastal marine life, North Carolina fossils, and maritime history.

    3. Discovery Time - Free instructor-led program available at 11 AM or 3 PM in the Museum Auditorium or lobby during the summer months (June - August). Our informative talks and/or activities cover a variety of maritime history, culture, and marine science topics. Open to visitors of all ages.

  4. Summer Programs for Children
    1. The Junior Sailing Program uses the fun of sailing to teach seamanship, navigation, boating safety and sailing techniques for beginning to advanced sailors. Classes include two-week sessions, one-week sessions and Regatta Week. Contact the museum at 252-728-7317 or e-mail maritime@ncdcr.gov for the 2009 brochure and application. (June - August)

    2. Summer Science School for Children investigates the coastal environment and NC maritime history. Classes include pirates, boat models, seashore life, night nature, coastal explorers, nature photography, fishing and underwater archaeology.
