A Living History: Occupied Beaufort, 1862

alt

Saturday, March 24, 2012

The rumble of cannon fire will be heard throughout downtown as the occupation of Beaufort begins on Saturday, March 24, 2012. A collaboration of the Maritime Museum, Beaufort Historic Site, Fort Macon State Park, Cape Lookout National Seashore, and The History Place will bring the county together for a Living History Weekend for the entire family. Downtown Beaufort will have vignettes of soldiers and civilians, mourners in the Old Burying Ground, infantry drills, and cannon demonstrations.

Visit the Watercraft Center for navy interpretation, and view two period vessels that will cruise the waterfront. Beaufort Historic Site will host a military encampment, and give bus tours of Civil War-era homes. Throughout the day, Cape Lookout National Seashore will offer tours of the lighthouse and discuss its attempted destruction by Confederates.

Finish your Saturday programming at Fort Macon with an impressive nighttime cannon firing. On Sunday, March 25, Cape Lookout National Seashore will continue to offer tours of the lighthouse. The History Place in Morehead City will conclude the weekend at 2:00 with period music by the Carteret Grays. Please join us in commemorating the sesquicentennial through remembrance of Beaufort’s place in American Civil War history.
